Nevis makes Waves at the St Kitts Triathlon Mini Series

It has been too many years since a Triathlon was held on the sister island of St Kitts and they have been sorely missed, the reformed St Kitts Triathlon Association hosted the 2nd race in its fall mini series last weekend, this happily coincided with the 1st of the Nevis Cycle and triathlon clubs series.

It was a coming together of old adversaries and friends alongside the youth of both islands, meeting to celebrate the sport of triathlon, congratulations have to go out to event organiser Charles Lovrics and his team for putting on a great race.

For the older members of the Nevis team it was a joy to return to the place where triathlon started for them, all of them came into the sport of triathlon as bikers on relay teams, Reggie Douglas, James Weekes, Alex isles, Winston Crooke, and Greg Phillip all had great memories of racing at this wonderful location, Frigate bay beach was once again the location for the start of the race, a 450 meter swim, followed by a 15km bike and then a 4km run.

The real stars of the event were the junior racers who came over from Nevis, some of them competing in their very first triathlon, with Sean Brear putting on a great show to take top honors in the junior category and placing 7th overall in the males, with Triffon Simmons 2nd junior in his very first Triathlon, and 9th overall male. Sasha Lloyd was first junior female and 3rd overall female, Adjua Lloyd and Andrea Brear taking 2nd and 3rd junior spots respectively, commiserations go out to Sandi Beauregard who was also competing in triathlon for the first time, and had been holding her own against Sasha when a fall on the bike put her out of the race, watch out for this one!

The event was of course dominated by the nations number one athlete Reggie Douglas who romped home unchallenged in a time of 55:36, his arch rival and current National triathlon Champion James Weekes had to race as part of a relay team due to a leg injury but still managed to post the fastest bike split of the day with a time of 29:31 for the 15kms. Alex Isles showing a strong return to form to take second overall with Royston Queely of st Kitts coming in 3rd, nice one Royston! Greg Phillip was also in good form as he blasted past a number of athletes in the final part of the run to put himself in 6th place male followed closely by Matt Lloyd, father of Sasha and Adjua. The womens event was won by Laura Talaga well deserved as she is one of the driving forces behind triathlon and cycling in St kitts, she was followed by Kathleen Brownsdon also of St kitts.

Another key part of the event was the relay team race that involved other members of the Nevis junior team, congratulations to first time athletes Donique, Lucien and Amber whose teams placed 3rd, 4th and 6th respectively, they were very impressive in their debut races.

The next and last race in the St Kitts series is to be held on the 11th of December and it is certain team Nevis will be there, we would like to thank the organisers and sponsors for putting on a fun event and bringing triathlon back to the big island, and special thanks to Mr X for stepping in at the last moment for the relay race.

The 2nd race in the Nevis series will be a Duathlon (Run/Bike/Run) on the 18th December and all are welcome
