Round Nevis Road Bike Race, By James Weekes
It was another beautiful saturday afternoon as the nevis cycle and triathlon club put on yet another cycling event. The course was a one loop race around the island for the masters, juniors and elite while the novices did a shorter route from oualie to long point roundabout via the bypass and back.
The race started prompt at 4:00pm. With about 15 riders at the line the count down began and we were off.
Reggie and I stayed at the back to asses the skills and tactics of the yonger riders for the first half of the race which took us to the summit at pond hill, then the real fight began. Now it was a man's race as we soon drop young Assim and Trefon.
I checked out at zion leaving reggie and the two youngsters behind, riding solo until maddens estate where reggie once again made contact. Then it was all about race tactics between us to try and drop each other. Reggie would attack and I would pull him back and vice versa. So it all came down to the final sprint to the line where I out sprinted him by some 12 seconds.
Assim came in in some minutes later to hold 3rd overall and first for the juniors while Triffon came in seconds behind followered by shawn brear and a fabulous ride by Sasha out riding her dad Matt and Greg. it was a great day in the saddle as the youngsters showed great potential in taking up the challenge to become the next Nevisian stars Congratulations to the novices, who were competing for the first time, and thanks again to the timing crew Collette and Marecia.
The next challenge will be on the 10th July, when TNCTC hosts a 50km road race, this time on a flatter loop coursebetween Cotton Ground and Charlestown, start time 3.00pm at Cotton Ground, for more information contact: - Matt lloyd 667 7776 or Reggie 664 0992
