SKN Cyclists continue to impress in Italy
Monica Ceccon was very impressive during the 125km South Garda Road ‘Granfondo’ cycle race, fresh from her exploits in the recent world championships, Monica returned to her native Italy to “stretch her legs” in this popular race series.
Over 1000 cyclists took part in this event, one of them was SKNCF Gen. Secretary Winston Crooke, he stated “I have been watching the guys have all the fun for a week, now it was my turn to have a go” Crooke finished No. 285, halfway down the field in the very competitive, but shorter ‘Mediofondo’ of 85kms, completing the tough and varied course in 2:49:44. “It was an amazing experience, they go very fast, the group I had hooked up with were doing 45kph at times”
Monica meanwhile was in a catfight! The longer course taking the riders up a very serious 6km climb, not only was she racing against some of the toughest women in the sport but a large number of the guys were desperate to not have her beat them. Her pre-worlds training did pay off as Monica had to sprint off with a number of male and female athletes across the finish line, she completed the course in a time of 3:46:40 finishing 119th out of 500 plus cyclists, this finish placed her 3rd female overall and second in her age group. Monica stated “it was a very tough course, but my legs were good today”
Monica proudly wore her SKN uniform as she received her prizes.
