Mountainbike race, Phillip takes the win
Saturday May 16, 2009 was the second mountain bike race of the cycling season on Nevis. The race named the “Atlantic View” took place in Round Hill Estate.
The race began with a tightly bunched field for the initial mile but soon began to disburse as the pressure of the off-road course began to tell. Elite and Elite juniors did seven laps while the other juniors, women and masters did five laps. From the second lap it seemed that the race was already decided as Stephen Ward, Winston Crooke, and Kristina Stoney opened a substantial lead on the rest of the pack. The Junior 5 lap race was being led by Kennard Sampson, with Devon Jeffers and Richard Leader following, Gordon 'Doc' Avery was showing amazing grit and stamina as the sole masters representative. By the fifth lap Greg Phillip and Assim Chapman had closed the gap, reeled in Winston, and now had Kristina squarely in their sights. They managed to catch and pass her with half a lap remaining; only Steve was next but it was going to take something special to snatch a win from the seemingly sure victory within his grip, but Greg was up for the task, he quickly closed the gap and was just yards away when Steve fell just fifty metres away from the finish line. As Greg crossed the line to celebrate his first mountain bike win, Assim also passed Steve and they finished in that order, superb riding from Greg with a special mention to Assim, Kristina, and Stephen, the clubs newest member who sent out a clear signal that he is one to watch.
