Triathlon Mini-Seris starts with a bang
The Nevis Cycle and Triathlon Club hosted the first of the 2006/7 Mini Triathlon Series on October 28th which began at around 11:30 am at Oualie Beach Resort. The fishing tournament was also being held that same day and place, giving the spectators got something to enjoy while the boats were out. This being the first one in the series we were skeptical as to how many competitors would turn out for the event. Surprisingly we got a contingent of 18 competitors, we had one guest from the Four Seasons Resort and one from Oualie Beach Resort, some MUA students also put their best feet forward along with the usual locals who gladly jumped in to have some fun. Luckily for us it was a very hot and beautiful day after so much recent rainfall, however, as the heat built up our fluids were drained away, which meant that only the stronger athletes will overcame the rest.
The swim was 250 mtrs with a 10km bike and a 3km run.
As the athletes gathered at the beach for the start I could see the excitement on everyone’s face’s, and with a rush they were off.
First out of the water was Chris Long (USA) challenged closely by Alex Isles with Reginald at his heels while Jamie was hoping to pass Reginald if he made the slightest stumble, James was out shortly after and the race was on as they scrambled in transition for the bike leg. The experience of reggie saw him leave out of transition first, but the lead began to change as the bike took its toll, Reggie held on and was first back with James seconds behind, but Keith had them in his sights. As we left transition for the run Reggie was not too far ahead of James who soon took his place at the front with Keith swiftly gaining ground. By the time they reached the turnaround Keith had already passed Reggie and had painted a bulls eye on James back, but James would have none of that with a quick glance back James realizing what was unfolding and pressed forward to hold on to the finish with Keith following close behind, Reggie placed third. Miranda Grandison was the first female followed by Daniel Moreno while Wendy Brear brought up third.
All in all, a lot of fun was had by all, and it was a good start for the Series we thank every one who competed and supported us, the visitors who joined in, and a special thanks to the volunteers, it was made possible because of you, thanks again.
The next event on the calendar will be a first for Nevis, this will be an Off-Road Triathlon to be held on the 25th November, based at Oualie Beach this race involves off road Mountain biking and trail running.
