Mini Triathlon Series Starts
With an open invitation to get up off the sofa and start training. The Nevis Cycle and Triathlon Club is hosting a series of mini triathlons that began on Saturday 26th at Oualie Beach Hotel, who are sponsoring the whole series. The distances increase as the series goes on, this week started with a 250mtr swim, 10km bike ride and 3km run, and was open to individuals and relay teams.
The turnout was good on this beautiful morning with athletes coming over from St kitts to join the fun, plus the bonus of a four seasons guest visiting from venezuela, getting invloved and participating. The swim was lead by Matthias Monecke of venezuela, followed by Jesica Geist representing St Kitts and our own Reggie Douglas, who was also the event organiser. Out of the water and into the grassy transition area in front of Oualie, the athletes hustled to change into their gear for the bike leg, the bike course headed left out of Oualie and over hurricane hill, up to camps and then back to Oualie. Easily dominating this leg with blistering speed was Chad Davis for St kitts setting the fastest time of 15.42 minutes on the bike, however not to be outdone and hot on his heels came Reggie and in third place Matthias. The women were being shown a clean pair of wheels by Jessica in first position, Miranda Grandison of Nevis and Nicky Aurangabadkar of St kitts trying to catch her. The beauty of triathlon is that it is not over till all three disciplines are completed, and Reggie took full advantage of this, being lead out onto the run by Chad, on a run course that took them back over the strength sapping hurricane hill, along Cattle Long Path and then back to Oualie, both athletes taking the lead at times, but Reggie dominated in the final stretch to pull away from chad and get the win. Third place was taken by a rusty James weekes of Nevis with a last sprint past Matthias to deny him a podium place. Coming in 5th overall and maitaining her lead was Jessica Geist followed by Miranda and then Nicky.
The whole event was a party from beginning to end with first timers Nick Martin and Reagan Bonin having a great time, and there were double celebrations for Dr Gordon Avery, the eldest competitor who had a birthday the same day, congratulations! Plus a special mention to Mathias for joining in on his vacation, all the volunteers Paula, Collette, Maurice, Moreen, Knox and Junior, and to reggie who had spent the morning setting everything up and still pulled off the win, well done. The next Mini- Tri takes place on 17th Dec, mark your diary.

These mini events are held to encourage participants build up slowly for the annual Olympic Triathlon on March 12th, where Nevis/St.kitts take on the rest of the world.
